Preface
Bass players often know more than they can easily explain. A line can live under the fingers for years before its internal logic becomes explicit. This book gives those decisions a compact mental model:
Role → Motion → Groove → Interaction → Design
Why piano notation?
A bass note means something because of what surrounds it. C can ground C major, turn A minor into an inversion, hold steady beneath changing chords, or complete a rhythm begun above. An isolated bass staff hides too much of that evidence.
Every canonical example therefore uses two staves. The lower staff is the bass line: monophonic, practical in register, and playable on electric or acoustic bass after octave adjustment where necessary. The upper staff is context: harmony, metric reference, phrase shape, call and response, or controlled contrast. It is never decorative filler.
This is not a piano-technique book. Pianists may play both staves, bassists may isolate the lower one, two musicians may divide them, and producers may hear them as independent arrangement layers. The grand staff is simply the clearest place to see cause and effect together.
How to use an example
- Read the listening question before the terminology.
- Hear the full texture.
- Isolate Bass only and Harmony only.
- For A/B examples, confirm that only one meaningful variable changes.
- Compare the full texture with each staff in isolation.
- Play the exercise, make the constrained variation, then hear the longer study.
Current-note highlighting links the sounding event to the score. If audio fails to initialize, the notation and its caption remain fully readable and the player reports the failure rather than failing silently. ABC source is implementation material and stays out of the explanatory flow.
Chord symbols are visual labels only. Playback sounds exactly the notes written on the two staves: Full plays both, Bass only plays the lower staff, and Harmony only plays the upper staff.
What the page can and cannot say
Conventional notation can show metric placement, subdivision, pitch, duration, rest, accent, articulation, and register. It cannot fully specify microtiming, touch, physical attack, interaction with a drummer, or the stability of a performed pocket. When the book discusses those qualities, it names them as performance—not as properties proved by an eighth note printed early or late.
The learning rhythm
Every finished chapter asks one question and introduces one idea. A one- to four-bar Microscope controls the evidence — as short as the concept allows, so the one variable under study is never in doubt. An eight- to sixteen-bar Music study proves that the idea produces something worth practising. Between them, a small exercise and one constrained variation turn recognition into design.
