The purpose of a mental model is not to make performance more intellectual. It is to compress complexity until intention becomes possible. At first you calculate G7 + A major = 9-#11-13. Later you recognize the shape. Eventually you hear the color and the hands find it. The chord tells you where you are. The layer tells you where you want the sound to go.
