Preface

Jazz pianists often know more than they can easily explain. A voicing can live under the fingers for years before its internal logic becomes explicit. This book is written for that gap. It assumes musical intelligence but never assumes that technical facility guarantees a complete mental model.

Our recurring loop is HEAR -> UNDERSTAND -> SEE -> VOICE -> MOVE -> PHRASE -> IMPROVISE. For much of the book we keep one laboratory fixed: Dm7 - G7 - Cmaj7. By holding function constant, we can actually hear what each new layer changes.

Superimposition notation policy

This book deliberately avoids slash-chord notation for superimpositions.

A slash symbol already has an established musical meaning. F/A, for example, normally means an F-major chord with A in the bass. Writing something such as F/Am7 to mean “play an F-major structure in the right hand while Am7 remains the underlying harmony” overloads that notation and obscures the very distinction this book is trying to teach.

We therefore use an explicit three-stage form:

underlying harmony + superimposed object -> pitch content -> resulting degrees

For example:

G7 + A major -> A-C#-E -> 9-#11-13

G7 + Eb major -> Eb-G-Bb -> b13-1-#9

Dm7 + C major -> C-E-G -> b7-9-11

The plus sign does not define a new chord symbol. It means: retain awareness of the harmony on the left while hearing or playing the recognizable object on the right.

When notation appears on the staff, the harmony and the superimposed object should be labeled separately. This prevents a conceptual tool from being mistaken for a conventional lead-sheet symbol.

A note on notation

The score companion labels right-hand notes by pitch name. This is deliberately redundant. Standard notation already tells an experienced reader which pitch is present, but the printed names support a different task: rapid comparison between the visible upper structure and its harmonic meaning against the bass. The labels are scaffolding and may be ignored once they become unnecessary.

No fingerings are prescribed. Fingering depends on hand size, articulation, register, tempo, what precedes the phrase, and what follows it. A fingering that is sensible for an isolated arpeggio may be poor inside a line. The method therefore treats fingering as a performer’s technical decision rather than part of the harmonic theory.

The audio is a plain synthesized reference, not a performance — it exists so you can check what you think you’re hearing against what is actually on the page.

Why we stay in C for so long

A method about relationships can paradoxically become harder to learn if every example is immediately transposed. Early transposition changes too many variables at once. By fixing Dm7-G7-Cmaj7, the ear receives repeated exposure to the same harmonic gravity while the upper layer changes.

This is experimental control applied to ear training. If G7 remains G7 and only the right-hand object changes, you can attribute the new color to that object. Later, when the relationship is stable, transposition becomes essential because it proves that you learned a relationship rather than a set of note names.

The learning sequence

Every practical concept in this book follows the same order:

hear the object -> play it vertically -> arpeggiate it -> permute it -> connect it by voice leading -> alter its rhythm -> decorate it chromatically -> improvise with it

The order matters. Chromaticism introduced too early can hide the sound we are trying to learn. A superimposition should first become audible as an object. Only then do we let it dissolve into language.

The companion score follows the same rule. Early exercises are intentionally systematic. They are not supposed to imitate a finished solo. Their job is to make one harmonic relationship unmistakable. Later exercises become increasingly musical as the ear gains something stable to manipulate.

How notation and exercises work together

Exercises appear inside the relevant chapters so that sound and explanation remain adjacent. A separate companion score collects the same material for uninterrupted practice at the piano.

Block examples use compact labels:

G7 + A major -> 9 #11 13

Individual notes are named only in arpeggiated or linear exercises. Stacked chord tones are not labeled individually: once the object is shown as a chord, extra note names create visual noise without adding useful information.

The printed exercise progression is normally:

  1. block;
  2. pure arpeggio;
  3. inversion;
  4. three to five permutations;
  5. voice-leading connection;
  6. rhythmic transformation;
  7. chromatic approach or enclosure;
  8. phrase.

Not every chapter needs all eight stages. The sequence describes the direction of travel, not a quota.
